I know that I’m accused of being a gadget – lover but I’ve been so impressed with Nuance’s Dragon Dictation application for the iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch that I’ve made a demo to show it in action.
I think that Nuance have provided an amazing service with this product. If you download it (currently free) on the iTunes apps store, be sure to download Dragon Search at the same time. Another awesome app which lets you search the web by voice.
Simply speak your search queries and get simultaneous results from a variety of top websites and content sources including:
Google, Yahoo, or Bing (depending on your default settings)
YouTube
Twitter Search
iTunes™
Wikipedia
If you allow the app to know your location from the iPhone, and, for example, you searched for “restaraunts”, it would return a list of restaraunts local to you. Fantastic.
Nuance have just announced UK version of Dragon Dictation for the iPhone as a FREE application for limited time. See today’s press release
I’ve seen a demo of Dragon Dictation for the iPhone and it’s amazing so get downloading!!
You can dictate texts and e-mails right into the iPhone. Speech to text data processing is done on Nuance’s server (so you need to have a good data connection) and the the transcription results of your voice are delivered as text on the device very quickly.
Quite magical really! But I would say that as I love technology like this.
Olympus has introduced a new range of digital recorders in the Olympus DS-5000 and DS-5000iD Voice Recorders and AS-5000 Transcription Kit with a raft of improvements and many new features.
I have been testing out a new digital recorder for inclusion on the website.
It is an Olympus device which is considerably cheaper than the flagship Olympus DS-4000. (Price to be announced soon).
In testing in conjunction with Dragon NaturallySpeaking, accuracy when dictating a standard passage was the same as the DS-4000. I achieved 96% after only 10 minutes of enrolment of the device as a “new user” in Dragon.
Whilst it is not a Professional model like the DS-4000 or DS-3300 and does not have features like insert, overwrite dictation or programmable buttons, it’s lower price point may make it acceptable for many users.
Other benefits include:-
Exceptionally clear sound playback
Events such as meetings, lectures etc can be recorded with the included stereo microphone
Small size
Can play downloaded content such as podcasts and Audible content.
A great time saver is to use a portable digital recorder like the Olympus DS-4000 to capture your dictation when away from the office. When you’re next back in the office, connect the recorder to the PC, and arrange for Dragon NaturallySpeaking to convert your dictation to text.
In my tests, whereas I can achieve 98% accuracy when reading a standard passage with a good headset microphone, accuracy with dictation from the Olympus recorder when reading the same passage is lower but is still a respectable 96%.
If you have an Olympus DS-4000 recorder or Olympus AS-4000 transcription kit, it’s important to be running the latest version to keep up with any changes made by Olympus to the software to keep pace with changes made by Microsoft to Windows XP and Vista. The latest version of the DSS Player is 4.10.3. You will need this version if running Vista. Read the rest of this entry »

So it’s now possible to use a bluetooth headset (provided it is sufficienly accurate and noise – cancelling) with Dragon NaturallySpeaking. Imagine excellent accuracy and speed with the convenience os standing up whilst dictating or moving around the office doing other things like filing letters for example.

Do you find that when you are out of the office, that on your return, you have a backlog of reports and e-mails to write? This is one extra travel stress that we can all do without! One solution is to use a digital recorder in conjunction with Dragon NaturallySpeaking. Dictation saved onto a digital recorder can be transcribed by Dragon on your return to the office. Although the accuracy is slightly less than with a high-quality headset microphone, nevertheless accuracy levels of 95% and above have been seen with a good digital recorder.I have 2 digital recorders, Olympus’s latest flagship model the DS-4000 and an older model, the Olympus DS-3000 and have good results with both. In tests, the Olympus range of recorders have been shown to offer excellent accuracy with Dragon.
