Changing your user file backup location

Posted by Peter Maddern on 12th December 2006

Dragon periodically saves a backup of your user file. The default setting in “options” is every 5 saves.

By default, the backup is saved to your “My Documents” folder which is also the location for your primary user file.

This is fine if you regularly back up your computer. But what if you are in an office environment and you don’t regularly make backups like you do with your home PC (or at least, I hope you do!). You run the risk of losing your primary and backup user files in the event (and I hope this never happens) of a computer crash.

The solution is to change the backup location to your server. The benefit of this is that company servers are ususually backed up nightly. This is how you would do this. The following instructions are for version 9 of the software:-

Firstly, close the user by clicking on “NaturallySpeaking” and “Close user”:-

Customising Your Vocabulary – From Existing Documents

Posted by Peter Maddern on 1st December 2006

I have written previously about improving accuracy by adding custom words and phrases to be Vocabulary Editor

Dragon NaturallySpeaking can automate vocabulary customisation by analysing text that is similar to what you are likely to dictate. The “Add Words from Documents” tool can “harvest” custom words but in contrast to the Vocabulary Editor, it can also learn word association style information from many documents at a time – the more relevant documents you provide for analysis, the better.

Step 1:  Locate some electronic documents you have written – think of reports, letters, memos, proposals. The more closely these documents match the type of dictation you will be doing, the better.

Note: You can also use documents written by someone else, as long as they are similar to your documents.

Step 2:  Make sure each document is in one of the following file formats: .txt (text-only), .rtf (Windows rich text), .doc (Microsoft Word), .wpd (Corel WordPerfect), .htm and .html.
