About
By Peter Maddern of Speech Empowered Computing.
Based in Wales, Speech Empowered Computing is a supplier of Nuance Dragon Naturally Speaking software and speech recognition peripherals. No obligation, on-site demonstrations which illustrate the benefits of Dragon NaturallySpeaking are available on request to groups or individuals throughout the UK.
A comprehensive support service includes advising on the optimum sound input device(s) tailored to meet the specific needs of the user, onsite installation of the software and peripherals plus comprehensive training so that users derive the maximum benefit from the Dragon programme. This is backed up by telephone technical support when needed. With over 30 years direct work experience in Multi – national Corporations, I am personally aware of the demands on Office Workers’ time. Given this, the prime aim is to equip users with the workplace productivity benefits that Dragon NaturallySpeaking can offer.
For many years I was a Product Development Scientist with a well known Multinational Company. I used Nuance’s Dragon NaturallySpeaking to create technical reports and to get through my e-mail mountain! So although I train users to use Dragon NaturallySpeaking, I have been a speech recognition user for many years. My technical roles made me realise the pressures faced in the Workplace and the need to get more done with fewer resources. I really believe that adopting speech recognition is an excellent productivity tool.
In January, 2005, I left the Corporate world to set up Speech Empowered Computing and now I offer advice on getting into speech recognition on the PC using Dragon NaturallySpeaking.

I am having intermittent but more recently continuous problems with my Dragon Preferred Version 9.5 (latest version downloaded today – 22 May). It is causing a problem with my Windows Explorer which wants to shut down especially when I have Outlook open- up to yesterday it created a complete freeze to my system (XP – Word 2007)which required a reboot – but I have managed to get over the freeze by the de installing the Doctor Watson Debugger – I have been on continuously to Dragon, who have been very helpful in trying to rectify my problem, but the solutions have been very much trial and error, they have agreed today to escalate the problem to their engineers who hopefully will find a solution.
My own suspicion is that it is related to Word 2007, which I feel they have not addressed in terms of updates or repairs – would welcome any comments you may have.

If you suspsect Word 2007 problems, check that Dragon’s plugin is enabled. See

I would also suggest trying a repair of the programme from your Control Panel. The procedure is harmless in that it only overwrites files so that any file that has become corrupted is replaced.
Please let me know if the problem gets resolved.

Hi Pete,
I have a story similar to yours, have been using voice recognition for many years and also got into playing cards and thus the two were married…Perhaps we can cross link blogs or more? http://www.handsfreepoker.com
