Hi, I’m disabled and have problems typing. I have dragon version 8 but have stopped using it because its accuracy keeps letting me down. i use pentium 4 PCs at home and work and each one has over 512 ram. I use a labtec desktop mic rather than a headset because i need to be able to move away from my desk rather than being connected via cables. I have a new laptop i hope to use. how do know if the spec will be up to the job? if you could advise me, that would be great. I would also like to make office phone calls via my PC. its taking me forever to type and its affecting my work . hope u can help. Could you call me on 0121 446 6685?

First of all, you might want to view this weblog article:-

I would not recommend a Labtec desktop microphone.

At a minimum you need a good quality “close talk” headset microphone with good noise cancellation properties. The Labtec is in all probability neither. We have a selection at:-

You may or may not need an external USB adapter (as mentioned in the above weblog article). The article explains how to test for this. If your sound card is sub optimum, you will either need a headset microphone with an integrated or add – on USB sound adapter. Again, we carry a selection.

We also provide headsets (wired and wireless) which allow a user to toggle between the telephone for initiating/taking calls and the PC for Dragon.

If you change to a high quality headset microphone, you will need to create a new user profile as the sound characteristics of a new headset will be different from the Labtec microphone.

512 Mb RAM is OK for version 8 (Nuance suggest 1 Gb for version 9 – see http://nuance.co.uk/naturallyspeaking/preferred/sysreqs.asp) although if you were to increase your memory for your version 8, you should see a big impact in responsiveness.

Summary – for good recognition accuracy you need:-

A good quality close talk headset microphone (wired or wireless)
    Consistent microphone placement
A good PC sound card with no noise in the signal (see weblog article for how to establish)
    Clear enunciation
A good PC specification (processor and memory)

Then correct mistakes in DNS (not manually) and use the tools in the software (as described in my weblog article) to further enhance your accuracy.

    I hope this helps.

    Peter
